South Ocean Management Ltd. ("SOM") was established in Hong Kong in 1992 to invest in the economic growth of China through companies listed on the Hong Kong stock exchange. Founded by former chairman, Richard McConnell, and Brook McConnell, presently President and Chief Investment Officer, the Group commenced offering its services as a fund manager in 1992.
Our disciplined approach to managing discretionary portfolios has been tested throughout many challenging Asian cycles.
The company's investment advisor is registered and regulated by the Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) in Hong Kong, and the company itself is also registered in the US with the Securities Exchange Commission (SEC).
The two founding members of South Ocean Management, Ltd. wrote and published a book on investing in Hong Kong called, The Investment Opportunity of a Lifetime, Hong Kong, 1997 and Beyond. The book is based on the firm's philosophy of investing in the economic emergence and growth of China through the listed companies of Hong Kong entrepreneurs.
The President, Brook McConnell, has published his book, Insights of an American Investment Manager in Hong Kong, in late 2020. The book is part biographical, part analysis and description of how South Ocean manages investing in the Hong Kong stock market.

Our Principals
Brook McConnell, born in 1952, President and CIO, co-founded the company’s operations in Hong Kong and relocated there from the United States in 1992. Before co-founding the company, he worked as an institutional securities broker with Melhado, Flynn & Associates in New York City for five years and, prior, as Vice President with PaineWebber, Inc. in Washington, D.C. for eight years. He is a 1974 graduate of the University of Denver.
Steve Taw, born in England in 1958, has spent his entire career in Financial Services in Investment Banking, Private banking and Asset Management. He has worked in Asia for the last 26 years at Chase Manhattan Bank, Republic National Bank of New York and HSBC Asset Management. He was appointed Director of South Ocean in 2006 and joined the Company full time in 2011. Steve has a Type 9 Discretionary Management License from the Hong Kong SFC.
